Thomas Sanford Edmonds (1840-1923)

Pvt. Thomas Sanford Edmonds

Thomas Sanford Edmonds was born in Walton County, Georgia on December 29, 1840.

He was the firstborn son and second child of James Powell Edmonds and Rebecca Ann Snow.












At ten years of age, Thomas Sanford Edmonds is shown living with his family in Watkinsville, Clarke County, Georgia on the 1850 U.S. Census.


The 1860 U.S. Census shows him and his sister, Sarah Frances, living with relatives near Union Point, Greene County, Georgia.



In March of 1862, Thomas Sanford Edmonds joined the military of the Confederate States of America and served in Company H, 42nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, Stovall Brigade.

He was disabled while in the line of duty in Tennessee on December 16, 1864 and was honorably discharged on the same date.


Thomas Sanford Edmonds is shown on the tax rolls with property in Walton County in 1868 and 1869.  In the 1870 U. S. Census he is shown living with his mother and siblings near Monroe, Walton County, Georgia.

On October 19, 1873, Thomas Sanford Edmonds married Martha Ann Beatrice McGaughey in Walton County, Georgia.  Martha was the daughter of Andrew Jackson McGaughey and Tommie Cook.


By 1880, the first of their two sons, James Jefferson Edmonds was born and the family is shown living in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia on the 1880 U.S. Census.


The 1900 U.S. Census shows Thomas Sanford Edmonds, his wife Martha, and their second son, Thomas Jackson Edmonds living in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia.  Martha's widowed aunt, Martha Wright is also shown living with the family.


In 1910, Thomas and Martha, along with both sons and Martha's widowed aunt are shown living in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia on the U.S. Census.


The 1920 U.S. Census shows Thomas and Martha Edmonds living in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia.


Thomas Sanford Edmonds passed from this life on May 27, 1923.  He is buried in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia. Tombstone photograph was taken by FindAGrave member, Bud.  The year of birth shows 1841.  However, his death certificate and the application for pension of Civil War soldiers show 1840.

The following children were born to the marriage of Thomas Sanford Edmonds and Martha Ann Beatrice McGaughey:
James Jefferson, 1875-1935 (m. Eula Mary Lane, 1883-1980)
Thomas Jackson, 1884-1963 (m. Stella Bell Fambrough, 1889-1961)
Thomas Sanford Edmonds was my paternal great grand uncle through his brother, my great grandfather, William Newell Edmonds; his son, Bruce Edmonds; and his grandson, Bruce Alfonso Edmonds.
