Isham Russell Chisum (1814-1861)




Isham Russell Chisum was born in White County, Tennessee ca. 1814.

He was born to the marriage of Elijah Kaufman Chisum and Elizabeth "Betsy" Walling.

Elijah and Betsy Chisum moved from Tennessee prior to 1840. They settled in Nacogdoches County, Texas.






The 1840 Texas Tax List shows Isham Russell Chisum living in Nacogdoches County.


It was in Nacogdoches County where Isham Russell met and married Mary "Polly" Walling on May 21, 1840.


The 1860 U. S. Census shows the family living in Eutaw, Limestone County, Texas.


The following children were born to the marriage of Isham Russell Chisum and Mary "Polly" Walling:


Isham Russell Chisum died on May 10, 1861.  He is buried in the Tidwell Cemetery in Thornton, Limestone County, Texas.  Tombstone photograph was taken by FindAGrave member Donald McDonald.

Isham Russell Chisum was one of my paternal great-great-great grandfather through his daughter, Lucinda Chisum Steele; grandson, Isham Alfonso Steele; great granddaughter, Mary Allye Steele Edmonds; great-great grandson, Bruce Alfonso Edmonds.

  1. I am related to I.R.Chisum through my paternal grandmother Charlotte (Lottie) Mae Chisum mother of my father, James Chisum Beard.The Corp of Engineers moved the family graves and gravestones (some remains too deteriorated) to Jena Cemetery in the 60s.

    1. Hello cousin! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. Charlotte's father, I. R. Jr, and my 2g grandmother, Lucinda, were siblings. Ancestry site says that makes us 3rd cousins 1x removed. :-)
