PRENTISS - Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from Prentiss Baptist Church for John B. Bynum, 76, of Prentiss, who died Friday afternoon at the Jefferson Davis County Hospital where he had been a patient for one week.  Interment followed in the Prentiss Cemetery with Saulters Funeral Home in charge.
Bynum was a native of the Sumrall area of Lamar County.  He attended public schools there and later was graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi.  For a number of years he taught school in the counties of Lamar, Marion, Greene, Covington and Jefferson Davis.  From 1944 to 1960 he served as a county superintendent of education of Jefferson Davis County.  
He was an active member of the Prentiss Baptist Church and for at least 50 years he had taught Sunday School in the various communities where he ad resided.  
He was a veteran of World War One and a member of the Jefferson Davis County Election Commission, had served as a member of the Jefferson Davis County Democratic Executive Committee, the town of Prentiss Democratic Executive Committee and was an Advisor To Registrants of the Jefferson Davis County Selective Service Board.  
He was currently serving as secretary of the Jefferson Davis County Chamber of Commerce, a post he had held for several years following his retirement. He was also a substitute mail carrier from the Prentiss Post Office.
In November of 1971 he and his wife observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Flora McIver Bynum of Prentiss; one son, Jimmy Bynum of Mandeville, La.; three daughters, Mrs. Edwin Luper of Jackson, Mrs. Lloyd Livingston of Prentiss and Mrs. Bruce Edmonds of Sicily Island, La.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Howard Bynum of Jackson, Gordon Bynum and Terrell Bynum, both of Sumrall; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie McQueen of Hattiesburg, Mrs. Robert Bobinger, Mrs. Waldo Ford and Mrs. Dewey Robertson, all of Baton Rouge, La.

Mary "Polly" Walling (1818-1891)




Mary "Polly" Walling was born in Pike County, Mississippi on November 4, 1818.

She was born to the marriage of James Walling, Sr. and Martha Hamlin.

Mary "Polly" was a sister to Lucinda, Vance, Ann, Elizabeth, James, Jr., and Sarah Walling.






The 1820 U. S. Census shows James, Martha and Mary "Polly" Walling living in Pike County, Mississippi.


The Wallings moved from Mississippi to Texas after 1820 and prior to 1840. The 1840 Texas Tax List shows James Walling living in Nacogdoches County, Texas.


On May 21, 1840, Mary "Polly" Walling married Isham Russell Chisum in Nacogdoches County, Texas.


Mary "Polly" and Isham Russell Chisum had eleven children while living in Nacogdoches County.


By 1860, the Chisum family was living in Limestone County, Texas.


Following the death of Isham Russell Chisum in 1861, Mary "Polly" and children continued living Limestone County.  The 1870 U. S. Census shows Mary and three of her children, Isham Russell, Jr., Thomas Jefferson, and Rhoda living in the same household.



The 1880 U. S. Census shows Mary "Polly" Chisum as head of household.  Also listed as living in the same household are the following:
James Anderson Chisum (son-in-law)
Mary Emily Chisum (daughter)
Zanie Chisum (grandson)
Haden Hollis (grandson)
Monty Pearl (granddaughter)
Thomas Jefferson (grandson)
Nolla (granddaughter)
William Franklin (grandson)
E. J. Meeks (female/widowed) - possibly related through Mary "Polly" Chisum's daughter Martha who married William Meek/Meeks.


Mary "Polly" Walling Chisum died on January 18, 1891.  She is buried near her husband in the Tidwell Cemetery in Thornton, Limestone County, Texas. Tombstone photograph was taken by FindAGrave member, Alford.


Mary "Polly" Walling Chisum was one of my paternal great-great-great grandmothers through her daughter, Lucinda Chisum Steele; grandson, Isham Alfonso Steele, great granddaughter, Mary Allye Steele Edmonds; great-great grandson, Bruce Alfonso Edmonds.

Isham Russell Chisum (1814-1861)




Isham Russell Chisum was born in White County, Tennessee ca. 1814.

He was born to the marriage of Elijah Kaufman Chisum and Elizabeth "Betsy" Walling.

Elijah and Betsy Chisum moved from Tennessee prior to 1840. They settled in Nacogdoches County, Texas.






The 1840 Texas Tax List shows Isham Russell Chisum living in Nacogdoches County.


It was in Nacogdoches County where Isham Russell met and married Mary "Polly" Walling on May 21, 1840.


The 1860 U. S. Census shows the family living in Eutaw, Limestone County, Texas.


The following children were born to the marriage of Isham Russell Chisum and Mary "Polly" Walling:


Isham Russell Chisum died on May 10, 1861.  He is buried in the Tidwell Cemetery in Thornton, Limestone County, Texas.  Tombstone photograph was taken by FindAGrave member Donald McDonald.

Mary Ann "Polly" Powell (1823-1903)




Mary Ann "Polly" Powell was born in McNairy County, Tennessee on January 2, 1823 to the marriage of Archibald G. Powell and Telitha Berryman.

She was a sister to Mahala, Missouri Ann and Francis Marion Powell.















Per the 2012 Mexia Proclamation, Mary Ann and family came by covered wagon to Texas with their cousins the Berryman and the Parker families in 1833.





Partial Transcription:
WHEREAS, Mary Ann Powell and family along with the Daniel Parker family endured hardships and dangers as part of the first settlers in Grimes County, which later became part of Montgomery County, in the fight for Texas settlement and freedom, she endured chaos and loss from the massacre of family members at Fort Parker and as part of the Runaway Scrape from the approaching Mexican Army; thereafter she resettled in Montgomery County.
On September 28, 1838, Mary Ann "Polly" Powell married Alfonso Parcutt Steele in Montgomery County, Texas.

Alfonso Parcutt Steele (1817-1911)

Alfonso Parcutt Steele was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on April 9,1817.  He was born to the marriage of Stephen Parcutt Steele and Susannah "Susan" McCarty.

Alfonso was the first son and second of ten children born to Stephen and Susan Steele.

In 1835, Alfonso Steele joined Captain Ephraim M. Daggett's company of volunteers in Louisiana and traveled with the company to Texas to aid in the Texas revolution.



On September 28, 1838, Alfonso Steele married Mary Ann Powell in Montgomery County, Texas.

The following children were born to the marriage of Alfonso Parcutt Steele and Mary Ann Powell:
Hampton, 1839-1928
Alonzo Leo, 1841-1936
Alvarado "Rado", 1843-1934
Francis Marion "Frank", 1847-1883
Leonard, 1851-1938
Mary Ann "Molly", 1854-1940
Missouri Alice, 1860-1938
Following their marriage in 1838, Alfonso and Mary Ann Steele made their home in Montgomery County where Hampton, Alonzo and Rado were born.


Alfonso, Mary Ann, Hampton, Alonzo and Rado Steele moved from Montgomery County to Robertson County, Texas.  Robertson County later became part of Limestone County.

The 1850 U.S. Census shows the family living in Precinct 1, Limestone County, Texas.  By 1850, their son Frank had been born.  Note also that Alfonso's father, Stephen, was living with the family at the time.


The 1860 U.S. Census shows the family living near the Springfield post office in Limestone County. Hampton has married and is no longer living at home. Leonard and Mary Ann "Molly" were born in 1851 and 1854, respectively.


By 1870, Alfonso and Mary Ann had another child, Missouri Alice, who was born in December of 1860. Leonard is also shown living with his mother, father and sister.


The 1880 U.S. Census shows Alfonso, Mary Ann and a grandson living in Limestone County, Texas.


The 1900 U.S. Census shows Alfonso and Mary Ann Steele living in Limestone County, Texas.


An April 11, 1909 article in the Galveston Daily News shows Alfonso celebrating his 93rd birthday in the home of his daughter, Missouri Alice Steele Eubanks.

Mexia, Tex., April 10--Mr. Alfonso Steele, the sole survivor of the battle of San Jacinto, celebrated his 93rd birthday yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. Eubanks, at Forest Glade in this (Limestone) county.
The following interesting history in Col. Steele's family was gathered today:  The first of his original family (himself and wife), 2; children, 11; grandchildren, 66; great-grandchildren, 83; great-great-grandchildren, 12. Total, 174.
By 1910, Mary Ann Powell Steele has passed away (1903) and Alfonso is shown living with his daughter, Missouri Alice Steele Eubanks, and her family.



Alfonso Parcutt Steele died on July 8, 1911 in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas in the home of his grandson, Alvin Steele.  The following obituary appeared in the San Antonio Express on July 9, 1911:
